Lovely Peonies

The peonies have opened.

Praise the Lord, because that is the best smell I ever smelled. :)

I don't know how old peonies are, but they remind me of vintage times and sitting on the veranda with lemonade in a cut glass pitcher with matching glasses. Maybe around 1920. I should have lived then. Sometimes I feel like that's where I belonged.

Today they were calling for heavy downpours in the weather forecast and heavy rain will put your peony blooms right in the dirt.

So I did a little harvesting...

...and brought them in the house. The fragrance is wonderful, but I'm waiting for the hay fever people to start complaining.

Since the peonies are always covered in ants, I soak them in bucket. It drowns them and makes it safe to bring them in the house. But if you do this, try not to leave them in the bucket for long because too much water can wreck the petals.

Now I just have to wait for the darker pink ones to open.

Have a great day!!

  1. Your peonies are beautiful. You took some really nice pictures of them. I know what you mean about the smell. Mine are done for now. I have one new plant that is a darker one. I don't know if it will bloom or not.
    Have a great weekend.

  2. Oh Mary! Those are gorgeous! I had peonies for the first time this year and they are already gone! I was so excited because they were supposed to be blood red, but they bloomed pink. Still beautiful, but not nearly as full and pretty as yours! Thanks for the tip about drowning the ants! And as always...great photography!!

  3. Those peonies are gorgeous - they put my garden to shame. I have so much work to do inside, I've neglected the garden !
Thanks for stopping by Mary - I'm looking forward to seeing your quilt. It looks great so far, very pretty colours.

  4. Mary, your peonies are sooooo beautiful! Mine have not started to open yet; but they should be doing that soon. I love the soft pink color of yours. Mine are not that pretty. Thanks for sharing your photos!
